Yoga
I think the greatest benefit of yoga is that it makes the part of ourselves that creates drama smaller and makes the part of ourselves that is connected to the divine source bigger. There is an intangible quality of yoga that cannot be studied or measured. It is best explained, I think, by saying that it connects your physical body to your soul, or the part of you that is connected to all things and all knowing. Which is exactly the definition of yoga. It means to unify body, mind, and spirit. There are many styles and teachers of yoga. Every one of them has something of value to offer. Many people find that going back and forth between different styles is best for them. From a medical perspective, I recommend a style called Iyengar yoga. This style of yoga employs the use of props so that anyone, no matter how weak or strong, flexible or rigid can receive the benefits of yoga postures. It is named for BKS Iyengar who is still alive and celebrated his 90th birthday in December 2008. He still practices 2 hours of yoga per day and teaches on a regular basis. Mr Iyengar was a very sick child and he wasn’t expected to live to be an adult. Then his sister married a famous yogi named Krishnamachariya. Krishnamachariya took pity on Mr. Iyengar and taught him some poses to ease his ailing body. And Mr. Iyengar began to heal. The more yoga he did, the better he felt. He soon become completely well. Today, his style of yoga has evolved into yoga that is accessible to everyone no matter what his/her condition.
